Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay started to discover her creative and artistic side when she was a young girl because of her Aunt Denise. She was a night nurse to allow her mother the time she needed during the day for the love of literature, art, and theater. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the art form could be utilized to engage people. DuVernay was trained by her mother, with a conscience for social issues, and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was a resident of Compton for most of her life, but spent every summer in the company of her extended family members living in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to direct a movie about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she received degrees in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began to produce in broadcast journalism when she was still at college. She began her career as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house of a member of the jury as well as examine their junk. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she decided to shift her focus towards the field of publicity. DuVernay joined a small studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. In addition to PR, the company created several lifestyle networks such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
